Neal has only shown interest in and flirts with women. He even flirts with Diana and is a little clueless until Peter lets him know that Neal has no chance with her. He and Alex Hunter are shown to have slept together and he's had two big relationships with Kate Moreau and Sara Ellis. He went to great lengths to find Kate, even breaking out of prison and trying to run off with her before her death.
» Personality: With Neal, it is difficult to determine where the lie ends when it comes to who he really is. He is careful and controlled in what he shows, always playing a part. There are some genuine moments though but they are few and far between. Neal can sell anything he wants, taking on a role in a blink of an eye so it's best not to take him at face value. Most of all, Neal is charming. He knows how to get his way using whatever he has to. But he seems to prefer to do it with an easy smile which gets him far enough for his purposes. He's talented at manipulation, he understands people and knows how things work. He has an eye for detail not only in art and forging but with human behavior as well. These are not skills that just came naturally, he learned them from Mozzie, his oldest friend and alley, but at the same time, Neal was always a quick learner.
Neal is a bit of snob as well. He always prefers to be dressed in a certain manner and with style, protesting when Peter dares to suggest getting clothes from a thrift store. He likes the finer things in life- good wine, good art, good clothes, and enjoys a very nice view of the city where he found a place to live with June. He doesn't just like the finer things in life, he truly appreciates great works of art and rare artifacts, jewels, etc for what they are. Neal wasn't always like this though, when he arrived in New York he didn't even own a suit and it was Vincent Adler who made him who he was and set him (and Kate) on their paths.
Neal's morals are always questionable but he doesn't seem to want to go down the same path his father, who is mentioned as being a dirty cop, did. He seems to think it is inevitable though, that he will always be a criminal but while working with Peter Burke as a consultant for an FBI, Neal is shown to have a genuine desire to help others even if his methods aren't always the best. There are many examples of him doing what he has to above and beyond when working with Peter, but the best example that can be used is when he looks into why June's granddaughter was taken off the transplant list. He doesn't want to hurt people, he constantly states that he doesn't like guns and the one time he uses one, it's after Kate's death and when he is driven to the brink with confronting the man he thought killed her. Peter states that if Neal is treated as a criminal, that's what he'll be and it's true. Neal tends to act desperately when he feels he's backed into a corner with nowhere else to go.
While Neal normally is very rational and realistic, it all gets muddled up when it comes to Kate Moreau. The woman he broke out of prison for even though he only had a few months to go, Kate is the woman he'll do anything he has to for. Even though he met her while on a con, he eventually tells her the truth and the two stay together even after they loose everything. He's heartbroken when she vanishes on him, and it's his almost desperate love for her that is the reason the FBI catches him for the first time. Neal is a romantic at heart and Kate brings that out in him more than anything, he'll do all the grand romantic gestures just for her.
Peter Burke is the only one Neal really trusts. Neal admits this once, though while heavily sedated, but it's clear they had grown close while working together. Peter refers to Neal as a friend and the two have to trust each other while working cases. Neal could have left and ran, especially after he and Mozzie are able to get the Nazi treasure but Neal states that the life he has in New York, working with Peter, is what he stays for. He does what he has to to keep Peter from finding out the truth about the Nazi treasure even until he is forced to run by the end of Season 3.
» Appearance: Neal stands at around 5'11 and has short dark brown hair with striking blue eyes. He takes very particular pride with how he dresses, preferring to wear designer suits, thin ties, and a fedora. The classic Rat Pack look. He tries to make the only times he looks disheveled it's for a specific purpose or when working with messy projects.
He normally wears a tracking anklet but at his canon point, he has already cut it and left it behind at June's so it won't be with him.
